A Name Borrowed From a Mountain

Back in 1675, a man named Abraham Gabemma arrived in the Paarl Valley and looked up at a great granite outcrop catching the light. He named it "De Diamondt" and "de Pearlberg" — the Diamond, and Pearl Mountain. Today, that same granite dome is known simply as Paarl Mountain, and it still glows pink and gold when the sun hits it just right.

It's from that story that LAPERLE takes its name — "la perle" being French for "the pearl." The connection isn't really about the mountain itself. It's about what Gabemma was doing when he named it: looking for something worth noticing, worth naming, worth keeping. That's the same instinct behind every piece that comes out of the LAPERLE studio.

The brand itself began in 2018, almost as a side project — an extension of a printing business the owner had run for years, combined with a long-standing love of beauty, décor, and natural materials. What started in a very small shop in Paarl has, gradually and without much fanfare, grown into a fully-fledged online studio serving homes across South Africa and beyond. Why It Has to Be Linen and Cotton

From the very beginning, there was one non-negotiable: everything would be printed onto natural fibres. Not polyester blends, not synthetic finishes that feel slightly plastic under your hand — pure, breathable linen and cotton, the kind of fabric that's been used on dinner tables for centuries because, quite simply, nothing else feels quite right against a meal.

Natural linen and cotton handle spills, condensation rings from cold glasses, and the general chaos of a shared meal better than synthetic fabrics — they're more absorbent and far less likely to feel clammy or cling to the table.

Looking After Natural Fabric

Part of choosing natural linen and cotton over synthetic alternatives is accepting that they ask a little more of you — but in return, they reward that care by lasting far longer and ageing far more gracefully.

For the first wash, a gentle hand wash in cold, diluted vinegar water helps set the print and settle the fibres — no scrubbing, wringing or soaking, dried flat, and washed separately from the rest of your laundry. After that first wash, the routine stays gentle: hand wash only, no scrubbing or wringing, and a phosphate-free detergent to protect both the fabric and the print.
