Embrace winter with Burgundy or Maroon in interior décor

Embrace winter with Burgundy or Maroon in interior décor
  by Wilma Louw

As Burgundy is one of the popular colors on the runways, it will naturally follow through in interior design. With winter approaching us, we are looking to change our living spaces and bedrooms to embrace warmer colors.  A natural cream colored couch is perfect for summer but might look cold and unwelcoming in winter.  You don’t need to re-upholster it in rich velvet, but you can add warmth by using rich colored scatter cushions and throws to totally change the mood.

Burgundy and maroon colors are not for those who jumps and changes their décor items every time that there is a new Color of the year.  Burgundy grounds an area, add warmth and a sense of luxury. It can be timeless if used correctly.

Unlike fire-engine-red, burgundy is a very versatile color and pairs with many different styles and colors.  As it is a strong color, it makes a strong statement. Soften it with contrasting, soft colors and textures or let it steal the show on its own. Picture it with blush pink; natural wood; greens; navy; sky blue, rust orange or even gold and copper.

The difference between Burgundy and Maroon:

  • Burgundy is a rich color with a purple undertone – like red wine.  It is a mix of red and purple.
  • Maroon (also called Bordeaux) is a dark reddish-brown color as it is a mix of red and brown.
  • And yes, Burgundy is brighter because of the reddish undertone.

So how do you incorporate it into your existing home?

  • Burgundy offers a sophisticated, understated boldness that instantly adds character and an expensive feel to any room.  Try a few scatter cushions and a throw or two.  Your room will instantly be elevated.
  • Patterned curtains with a hint of burgundy will immediately add warmth and character to your room.  Even in a bedroom.
  • Paint a focus wall burgundy or be brave and paint the 5th wall, your ceiling, a burgundy color.  You can go so far as to paint your tired looking bookshelves the same color.
  • As burgundy is a dark color, it will be wise to use it in a well-lit room. Lighten it further with light, soft colors.
  • In a darker area, you will be able to create a moody space by adding burgundy.  Soften it with warm lights in different angles and heights.
  • Do you have a very modern home with white walls?  A burgundy color here and there will work perfectly.  A burgundy wall with a grey corner couch and the rest of the wall still in white, will be magic!  All-white bedroom?  Add a burgundy throw. Maybe stretch it a bit with adding a gingham scatter in white and burgundy colors….

I am sure you have your own ideas as how to add warmth to your home.  So, let’s get started then! Winter is around the corner…
